Phnom Penh, March 20, 2024 – A Cambodian National Assembly delegation, led by Ty Sokun, Secretary of the Fifth Committee, along with Khuth Chandara, Member of the Ninth Committee and Vice Chairman of the Cambodia-Russia National Assembly Friendship Group, journeyed to Moscow to witness the Russian Presidential Election in March 2024. Accompanied by two assistants, their mission spanned from March 14 to 20, underlining Cambodia's interest in international electoral processes.
Pich Khun Panha, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Russian Federation, was also part of the delegation, emphasizing the diplomatic significance of the visit.
The Cambodian observers engaged in extensive discussions with key Russian figures, including Gennady Ivanovich Ordenov, a Member of the Federal Council, and Vladislav Davankov, the youngest presidential contender from the New People's Party. These meetings provided insights into Russia’s electoral system, campaign registration processes, and the perspectives of candidates on electoral proceedings and outcomes.
Furthermore, the delegation conducted field visits to several polling stations in Moscow, engaging with voters, civil society observers, and representatives from the candidates' parties. They witnessed firsthand the voting and ballot counting processes, gaining a comprehensive understanding of Russia's electoral dynamics.
The observation culminated in attending the announcement of preliminary results by the Russian National Election Commission, which reported a 77.44% voter turnout. Incumbent President Vladimir Putin emerged victorious with 87.30% of the votes, a testament to his enduring popularity among the Russian electorate.
The Cambodian delegates also shared their observations with international representatives, contributing to the global discourse on electoral transparency and fairness.
This mission was part of a broader Cambodian presence, which included delegations from the Senate and the National Election Committee of Cambodia, highlighting the country's commitment to fostering international relations and understanding through electoral observation.
